Visual Studio TFS Over a home network ( Team Foundation Server ) ( 2010 )

Objective: Put VS TFS on W7 and then connect to this on my Windows XP desktop so I can work from either
7 laptop with full TFS including Source Code Control and Work Items

Wow … round the houses but have got there … think it was really important to achieve
I do not have a lot of network experience so thought I had to set up a virtual server. Then spent hours and hours getting Virtual Server 2005 R2 and Hyper-V RSAT on my W7 machine with the intention of then installing a server system on virtual server, then connecting to this etc etc…

However I have just discovered that I did not need to do this.

Make sure the Windows 7 has a user login and password
Go to W7 Team Foundation Server Administration Console > Get Web Access URL e.g. http://computername:portno/tfs/web
Go to XP IE and enter above address. Should be asked for a login – password. Enter this and hey presto you should be in.
In XP Visual Studio Connect to Team Foundation Server Add server. Just enter server name if using default port numbers and path. Then connect.

Now I am in business and can start coding -> adding value to my product
At last !!

Virtual Server 2005 update to run Server 2008 (32 bit only)

Initially unable to use Windows Server 2008 64 bit, because HAV not activated in BIOS of machine.

See –

which leads to

however there is a patch to this which is
Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Update (KB956124)

Download then use a command prompt run as administrator

HAV ? To run 64 bit then on Sony Vaio restart and on boot press F2. On second tab it is possible to turn on Virtual Assistance or something.

If you are running Windows Vista, Windows Vista Service Pack 1, or Windows Server 2008, run the update from an elevated command prompt. To do this, use the following command syntax:

msiexec /p path of .msp file

check version after

However please not this bit of the top website above
Does Virtual Server 2005 support 64-bit processors?
A.

Virtual Server 2005 R2 runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit (x64) host operating systems. It supports both AMD64 and Intel IA-32e/EM64T (x64) processors. Note that Virtual Server 2005 R2 does not support Itanium (IA-64) processors. Earlier versions of Virtual Server run on x64-based hardware provided it is running a 32-bit version of a supported host operating system.

Note that Virtual Server 2005 R2 requires that guest operating systems be 32-bit.

Using the keyboard and mouse in a virtual machine in Virtual Server

Virtual Server 2005 provides much of the required keyboard functionality through the use of a Host key and keyboard shortcuts. By default the Host key is the right ALT key.

User must have a password on the account. Then need to login each time. ( may be a way of getting around login later )

Virtual machine could not be added. A configuration with this name already exists.

The virtual machine could not be added. A configuration with this name already exists. Fine on pre-Windows 7, e.g. on Windows Server 2003
Same ide in Windows 7, but different location

leads to Accessing "Application Data" in Windows 7

Anyway shortcut in Windows 7 is at
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines

Copied from above website
This happens because virtual server creates a shortcut to each virtual machine added or created in the path <system drive>\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines\ and doesn’t remove this shortcut when the virtual machine is removed.

Open Windows Explorer and browse to <system drive>\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines\ and delete the .vmc files for the virtual machines that are no longer listed in the Master Status list. Now try to add the virtual machine.

Virtual Server 2005 R2 on Windows 7

See — specifically entry on Saturday, May 23, 2009 3:25 PM
I think if you enable only the "Turn off Application Compatibility Engine". That is what I did.

Also – although some of the direction is mis-leading
To get to the IIS settings go to – Windows Key – Turn Windows features on or off

"My Documents" and "Public Pictures" are all special folders. Their location may be "D:\Users\UserName\Documents" yet they themselves may be called My…

Windows 7 Partition using Windows Disk Management

I’ve got a brand new combined harvester Sony vaio laptop.
Great so far. Like windows 7 and DLNA wireless media to tv is cool. And have just found windows key + tab, also windows key + left or right arrow nice.
See also following link, where I have added community content
Anyway laptop came with one C drive. Windows 7 ( unlike XP ) has it’s own partition utility Disk Management. Hoorray.
Worked quite easily for creating a new D drive, however I was initially only able to reduce C to 146 Gb with D = 142 Gb. The problem was an unmovable file. You can use Eventviewer > Application Log > event 259 to find address and then use Runas Administrator on command prompt to find culprit file. Use.
fsutil volume querycluster C: 50 0x2000
Initially this told me to turn off windows search. This allowed me to shrink C a little.
However the next unmovable file was a system file with use unknown. Sony email query response was that this was the minimum size for C or to use a third party partition tool.
Turning off System Restore, then restart can help. Consider a restore point before, and to turn it back on after. Worked x 2 for me! To turn off System Restore right click on Computer use system protection pick drive and configure.
As to size of C drive for Windows and Programs the next max shrink still only allowed a min of 76 Gb. So I plugged for 100 Gb. However I then had another go with eventviewer with the next file being a user temp file. So I used Disk Cleanup to remove temp files, turned restore back off and hey presto can shrin now allows a min C drive of 27.5 Gb = 28191 Mb. I plugged for C drive at 80 Gb, D at 80 Gb and have currently left the rest of the disk free, for future allocation to new partition(s) again.
The reason windows utility gets stuck is likely because it tries to do the partition on a running system.
Whats next ….

I’ve got a brand new combined harvester computer – desktop this time a Novatech IRush Pro.
Seems quick, but a little noisey which was one of the things I was trying to avoid.
Anyway have partitioned as:
C = 102405 MB = 100 Gb (80 Gb on laptop )after volume labelling ( see other 100 Gb below 102402 may do it )
D = 204801 MB = 200 Gb Data (80 Gb on laptop)
E = Disk drive
T = 40965 MB = 40 GB Temp (20 Gb on laptop)
V = 102402 MB = 100 GB Virtual World. (40 Gb on Laptop)
